July 10, 2016 (Proverbs 10:19)

“When words are many, sin is not absent,  but he who holds his tongue is wise”  (Prov 10:19).  This proverb will be dealt with briefly as it is a subject not received by most to whom it most aptly applies. The warning issued here to those who would live righteously does not merely concern the common biblical admonitions concerning slander and gossip, both of which are to be carefully avoided. This proverb, I believe, deals more specifically with what might well be termed “verbal diarrhea” for lack of a more descriptive term. We all have encountered or are familiar with people who have an obsession when it comes to talking. They are literally seen to talk continuously without taking an evident breath of air as best can be observed. Such persons usually have a solution for nearly all controversies, have firm if not unyielding opinions on most subjects, and have little interest in giving any consideration to alternatives to their personal position in a matter. One might be able to insert a few words from time to time, but such moments are rather quickly following by a continuation of verbal rampage in a one-sided conversation. This kind of obsessive talking is usually birthed in deep insecurity, leading at times to what appears pride bordering on arrogance with the opinion of others having little merit. Note the proverb isn’t saying that when words are many, sin might be present. We are exhorted to be prudent with our use of words as when words are many, sin is NOT ABSENT!
