“When will I wake up so I can find another drink?” (Prov 23:35b). The final verse of this passage revealing God’s instruction to abstain from alcoholic drink describes its addictive potential. We are fully aware of the potential for those who engage in the consumption of intoxicating beverages to reach the place where one can no longer control their intake and come into the bondage of alcoholism. Those who have read the autobiographical book with the title “Hooked on Hope” on this website are aware I personally came under the strong and destructive influence of drink for years prior to being born again. It is pure deception from the heart of Satan which has not only believers in Jesus Christ but many of those in leadership positions contending that God does not urge abstinence from alcoholic drink. In the OT, Nazirites were an example of the highest standard of holiness, and according to God’s instructions took a vow to abstain completely from any fermented drink. God didn’t want a totally devoted person to risk intoxication if not possible addiction. The very same consecration should be emulated by all Christians as we are to devote ourselves to a God who, by His own testimony, does not change (Malachi 3:6).
