“A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions” (Prov 18:2). All of us have encountered those who delight airing their own opinions, yet have very little if any understanding about the subject on which they opine. In fact, such people often do not even care to have understanding about which they speak as they are simply fascinated with the sound of their own voices. And they are referred to as fools in the word of God. In sharp contrast, Proverb 17:27 tells that a man of knowledge uses words with restraint. Those with godly wisdom will be cautious in speaking, taking care to accurately speak not only truth but do so in a manner which will edify others whenever possible and not bring harm or offense unnecessarily. And there are times when discernment will serve to have one hold his tongue, even though what might be said is not only truthful but to the point of what is discussed. Only a fool will verbalize with his tongue every thought which comes into his mind without caution.
