“Wealth brings many friends, but a poor man’s friend deserts him” (Proverbs 19:4). This proverb is one of many which tells a truth which is contrary to that Jesus would have His followers practice in life. That so many choose to be friends with those successful in the sense of finances as opposed to those upright and moral in the eyes of God is the norm in not only America but the world in general. While it must be acknowledged that some may be both godly in character and wealthy at the same time, the conflict which wealth brings to a person’s relationship with God is warned of repeatedly in scripture. Indeed Jesus gives the following warning: “I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God” (Matthew 19:24). The reason for truth in these words is simply explained by the “deceitfulness of wealth.” Those with more than ample material possessions are not only at risk of allowing their riches to become an idol. They are also prone to lose the sharp edge of remaining totally dependent upon the grace of God for their lives. And likewise, one who deserts a friend because of his poverty never was a true friend in the first place. Friendships need to be based on appreciating the value which God places on the life of person, not his accumulation of wealth or lack thereof.
